Jing Tenglong

Jing Tenglong (b.1983) is a student of Tang Jian, a Chinese master who specializes in Gongbi painting featuring realistic animals. Jing started painting graffiti to capture little animals he loved at a young age. He became interested in Gongbi painting once he came across a catalogue with paintings of tigers.

The artist started to paint on raw xuan paper but moved to PiMade xuan paper in 2010 because the former must be water-sprayed and dried to a certain extent before one can start painting, that took longer time for one to complete an artwork. PiMade xuan paper is a comparably heavy-weighted with higher ability to absorb paint to reflect the texture of the animals’ fur.

One of the challenges of using PiMade xuan paper is the way to reflect and capture the softness and transparency of animals’ fur while demonstrating the technique of “silk and wool”. Jing read books and observed how other Gongbi painters painted to improve his techniques on brushwork and colouring and create his own style.

Colouring is another challenge that Jing had to resolve. He chose to paint with water-colour which is more transparent and clearer compared to other widely used stone colours. That also helped highlight the layers and accentuated the rich texture of the animals’ fur. The artist has constantly explored, fine-tuned, and developed his own style over the years.
